Registering as a war refugee: rights and obligations arising from temporary protection status

Ukrainian refugees who have fled Ukraine since 24 February 2022 can obtain war-refugee status throughout the EU. This is also known as temporary protection status. Firstly, we review whether you will stay in Berlin or be assigned to another federal state. If you have relatives or close friends in Berlin, please inform us at the Arrival Centre.

People forced to flee Ukraine because of the war will be granted a humanitarian residence permit for temporary protection (Aufenthaltserlaubnis zum vorübergehenden Schutz) in accordance with Section 24 of the German Residence Act. Refugees with permanent accommodation in Berlin can now apply for this residence permit online with Berlin Immigration Office (Landesamt für Einwanderung - LEA).

With an Ukrainian passport, one can stay in Germany for 90 days after first crossing of the EU border. A registration process needs to be started within this time period in order to stay in Germany legally.
